Victoriana in miniature - the Doll House Exhibit

(From MAC: The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts)

Cape May – The Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate is transformed into a wonderland of Victoriana – in miniature proportions – when Libby Goodman of Cape May’s Dollhouse and Miniature museum shares her collections with the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC).

The Grand Opening of “The Doll House” Exhibit on 7 p.m. Friday, April 23 is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided by the Twinings Tearoom.

“The Doll House: Treasures from the Dollhouse and Miniature Museum of Cape May” features more than 15 dollhouses from around the world, as well as miniature furniture, decorations and accessories.

The dollhouse collection includes dollhouses from different periods of time – including a Queen-Anne-style Victorian dollhouse from 1900. The Victorian dollhouse is made completely of wood – partly shellacked and partly painted.

Goodman opened the Dollhouse and Miniature Museum of Cape May in 1998. She has traveled to Europe and throughout the United States to search for pieces to add to her collection. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) has been offering the “All Victorians Great and Small Tour,” which combines a walking tour of Cape May with a tour of the Dollhouse and Miniature Museum, since 1999.

“It’s an amazing exhibit filled with petite and delicate objects that are so captivating and inviting,” said Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications Jenn Heinold. “Libby Goodman’s passion, dedication and enthusiasm for her collection is apparent in the quality, craftsmanship and beauty of every piece in this exhibit.”

The exhibit runs daily through August 29 in the Carriage House Gallery on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Gallery hours vary. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
