Festival - get used to the word. It's that time of year when we want to celebrate something every week, whether it's Irish music or the expansive Delaware Bay.
Mummers Parade
The mummers season opens in North Wildwood on Saturday when the city hosts its 13th annual Fancy Brigades parade, starting at 4:45PM. The parade begins on Atlantic Avenue at 16th Avenue, then heads north on Atlantic to First Avenue, west on First to Olde New Jersey Avenue and then north on Olde New Jersey to Spruce Avenue.
If you're in the mood for more mummers' music, go to Olde New Jersey Ave. at 4PM for a performance by the Duffy String Band.
Celtic Festival
Historic Cold Spring Village gets a little jump on the season with a Celtic Festival this weekend. Eat traditional Celtic foods and listen to a traditional bagpipe band. Watch Celtic dancers do their thing adn stroll the lovley, tree shaded grounds of the Village just over the bridge on route 9.
Victorian Fair
Or do a crafts' show / Victorian Fair on the grounds of the Emlen Physick estate on Washington St. in Cape May. Kids will like the real live Victorian figures brought to life and, who knows, you might find the perfect salt shaker or glassware among the collectibles.
Bay Days
How about doing a little day trip Saturday?? Head to Port Norris in Cumberland County for the annual Bay Days festival (there's that word again.) Start with an old-fashioned street parade Saturday morning at 11AM. then listen to Bayshore style music, eat Bayshore style food and even learn about the Bayshore art of shucking an oyster. Note: at 6PM there'll be an oyster shucking contest. That should be worth the drive alone. For more info, call (856-785-2060.
