Cape May Designer Show House

Posted 6/27/08

Cape May, NJ - There's a definite craftsman feel to this year's Designer Show House, the 1915 Otis Townsend House.

The original wood paneling and woodwork and even some light fixtures have been kept in their pristine state. The new furnishings and decor complement the National Register of Historic Places home.

The Designer Show House is an annual event sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. (See links to past houses on the right.)

Each year, regional designers decorate an empty Cape May house, with each designer focusing on one room or space. You can tour the newly redone home.

This year's stylish beach getaway has some extraordinary touches - like gilded ceilings and copper walls.

The wet bar features an unusual tile counter.

The media room, with its built in cabinets and couches, is a masterful use of space under the eaves.

The spacious home has eight large and airy bedrooms - including a nursery with hand painted murals.

One brand new item on this almost 80 year old home is the cedar shingles. When the asbestos siding was removed this spring, the original shingles under the siding had to be replaced.

The home was originally built in 1915 for Ocean City carpenter, lumberyard owner and developer Otis Townsend. he didn't stay long - he sold the property almost immediately. The house is now owned by David and Myra Kurkowski of Cape May.

The fourth annual Cape May Designer Show House is open for self guided tours seven days a week, through Sunday, Oct. 19, from 10AM to 3PM daily and 7PM to 9PM Monday through Friday. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for children.

The home's located at 115 Reading Ave., just a block from the ocean.
