Cape May's First Snow
Posted January 20, 2009
Cape May, NJ - Finally, some snow! We got a bare half inch that stuck to the beach and sidewalks for at least a couple of hours on Monday. You had to be up very early to see some of these pretty scenes.
The Washington Street Mall looked lovely covered in white, but snow only dusted area rooftops. Swans sat on a partly frozen Lily Lake in the Point. Beach grass was glazed in ice.
In previous years, our first winter snowfall has hit sometime in December, with a bigger follow up storm in January.
This year, while parts of the Northeast have received more than their fair share of snow, Cape May has been shut out.
So it was nice to see Madison Square Park's benches and BBQ grills frosted with a little white.
The snow stuck to parts of the promenade, but just for awhile.
Most streets were clear.
It's been an exceptionally warm winter so far, except for this past week's bitter cold.
Who knows. These might be Cape May's first and last snow on the beach photos for the year.
