2010 Polar Bear Plunge

Posted 1/17/10
Wildwood, NJ —Several thousand people turned out on Wildwood's beach Saturday to watch hundreds of brave souls run into a chilly, 37 degree Atlantic Ocean.

They were taking part in the annual Polar Bear Plunge, raising money for New Jersey's Special Olympics.

The air temperature was a balmy 45 degrees - almost springlike, after our recent cold snap.

But once the plungers hit the frigid ocean water, most did a quick about face, and headed back to shore.

A few hardy souls lingered in the just above freezing ocean, to show they were made of strong stuff.

Others, including cheerleaders from the Cape May Coast Guard base, paused to pose for a photo or two.
And who could blame them?
If you just took a dip in the Atlantic Ocean in January, you'd want a picture to prove it.
