Diana -

Cape May is a very walkable town so you don't have to worry about being very far from anything.  However, the best natural areas are outside of the town - a very easy bike ride away. Some of the areas you might want to visit: the Cape May Meadows, Cape May Point State Park, Higbee Beach. Check out the nature section of this site for more info.

You can stay at a B&B (with breakfast provided),  a guest suite (does not serve breakfast), a motel or a vacation rental.

Since everything is so accessible, I'd recommend that you focus on the type of lodging you want:

Stay at a B&B or hotel for the ambiance and if the idea of great breakfasts on site each morning appeals to you.
Stay at a guest suite or rental if you want a little more space and your own kitchen.
Stay at a motel if you just need one room with a kitchenette by the beach.

Have a wonderful time!

Check the B&B/Hotel  specials page  - link on the front page of Cape May Times. Also try emailing a couple of the inns - in early April I would think you could get a single night reservation without too much trouble.  We'd be interested to hear back to see how you did.

The Whales Tale on the Washington St. Mall has lots of jewelry - try there. See the shopping section for their contact info.

Re: the wedding question - as far as I know you can only use the beach for an actual wedding ceremony, not a reception.

There's info on Cape May wedding planning in the wedding section of this website - it might be helpful if you're planning to get married here.
