A Summer Morning on the Beach
Posted 8/05/06 When the white sand turns white hot in the blistering August heat, it's time to rethink whether you want to bake - literally - in the sun. One option - head to the beach early. Try 8AM. You won't be the only one. You'll see folks doing all sorts of things at that hour: They're practicing yoga at the water's edge. They're taking their morning constitutional with the waves lapping at their feet.
Some have beaten the crowd and have set up their umbrellas and chairs and blankets for the day.
These two guys even built a sand wall to protect their beach feifdom - all before 8AM.
The promenade along the beach (we don't call it a boardwalk in Cape May) is a happening place as well at 8AM. Bikers and joggers and walkers and talkers turn the paved strip along the sand into a major concourse.
This is a good option is you want to take a walk along the water but don't want any sand in your new Nike's. FYI - it's exactly a mile and a half from one end of the promenade to the other.
You could easily do the whole beach scene from 7 to 9AM, then head back to your hotel or rental for a shower. While everyone else heads to beach in the heat of the day, you can spend the rest of the day in nice, cool air conditioned shops, with a little break for a leisurely lunch. Now that's what I call a vacation.
