2006 Nun Plunge
Posted 3/13/06 Saturday, on what possibly was the warmest March day in memory, some of the school's sisters - dressed like ordinary folks - and some ordinary folks - dressed like nuns - joined dozens of school kids and ran right in.
No one seemed the least bit chilly, unlike the Polar Plunge in Wildwood Crest the week before, where icy winds whipped out of the west at 20 miles per hour. This time the weather was a heavenly 68. (Makes you wonder, doesn't it.) Some families even did the whole beach blanket thing while they waited for the plunge to start. It all looked very normal - for June or July.
The bathing attire ranged from typical swim trunks and suits to hula skirts and leis, St. Patrick's Day inspired hats and nun costumes. One gentlemen looked as though he had stepped right out of the past with his straw hat and red long johns.
No matter how warm it was on the beach, the water was still a chilly 42 degrees. No one stayed in the waves too long. Get in, get out then wrap that towel around you - that was the drill.
Even so, it seemed like much more fun than selling candy. If you'd like to contribute to the Our Lady, Star of the Sea Nun Plunge Fund, call (609) 884-4437.
