Historically segregated schools were the focus of noted photographer Wendell White. An exhibit of 50 photographs featuring  the landscape and archtecture of those schools is on display right now at the Carriage House Gallery on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate on Washington Street.

“Wendell White’s Schools for the Colored” looks primarily at schools in  the  northern ‘free’ states that bordered the slave states. Also included is an exhibit highlighting the life and soul of Cape May’s Franklin Street School.

Both exhibits, open to the public on Saturdays since January, open weekdays Monday through Saturday from April 2 through April 14. They are cosponsored by  the Center for Community Arts and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities.
