North Cape May Nursing Home Hit by Coronavirus

North Cape May, NJ -  There’s an outbreak of the coronavirus at a local nursing home. The Cape May County Heath Department confirmed that 26 people at Victoria Manor in North Cape May have tested positive for COVID-19. The number includes 15 residents and 11 staff.

Update: one death is reported.

The health department says it investigated reports of ill staff and residents. Those with symptoms of the illness were tested for the virus.  If their symptoms are not serious, the health department says the affected staff and residents are being monitored, medically isolated but not hospitalized.

More Protection Equipment

In response to the outbreak, Cape May County delivered 400 surgical masks and 200 gowns. The Lower Township facility is following Center for Disease Control guidelines for disease outbreaks.

County Health Officer Kevin Thomas says, “The situation is very serious, and we are deeply concerned about residents of our senior care facilities in Cape May County. That is why we need everyone to follow the stay-at-home order, social distancing guidance and other measures in recent health orders – to protect the people in our community who are vulnerable to severe illness from COVID-19.”

The 120 bed Victoria Manor is owned by Genesis Health Care. It includes both long-term nursing home patients as well as short-term rehabilitation patients.  Genesis operates an assisted living center – Victoria Commons -  on the same campus. The company also runs another nursing home/rehab center in North Cape May – North Cape Center.

Nine Senior Facilities in Cape May County

Cape May County has a total of six nursing homes/rehab centers and three assisted-living centers.

Assistant Director of Public Health Nursing, Mary Tighe said the county, in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Health, “are working closely with the facilities now to protect residents and staff.”
